Ancient Trails to Modern Times: The Origins of Merritt, BC
Long before European settlers arrived, the Nicola Valley served as a vital transportation route for Indigenous peoples. These First Nations communities followed seasonal patterns and trade routes that connected the region through the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Then, in the mid-1800s, ranchers were drawn to the area’s fertile grasslands and mild climate. European settlers, including pioneers like William Voght, Jesus Garcia, and John Charters, began cultivating the land at the confluence of the Coldwater and Nicola Rivers. This area, originally known as “The Forks,” laid the foundation for what would eventually become Merritt, BC.
From “The Forks” to Merritt: A Town is Born
In 1885, the Canadian Pacific Railway expanded into the Nicola Valley, catalyzing a wave of settlement, commerce, and opportunity. By 1906, the town was renamed Merritt, in honor of William Hamilton Merritt III, a key figure in railway and mining development.
As a result, the area became a hub of economic activity. The coal mining industry, along with growing forestry, ranching, and precious metal extraction, drew entrepreneurs, immigrants, and settlers from across Canada and around the world. In 1911, Merritt officially became a city.
